Sixty seconds with Kate Ellis...
Kate Ellis was born and brought up in Liverpool and she studied drama in Manchester. She worked in teaching, marketing and accountancy before winning the North West Playwrights competition. Kate's South Devon novels feature archaeology graduate Detective Sergeant Wesley Peterson. She has also written two books in the Joe Plantagenet series set in North Yorkshire
RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
Ellis: Loyal, caring and basically nice with a Liverpudlian sense of humour and a murderous imagination.
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Ellis: Missa Papae Marcelli by Palestrina or alternatively In My Life by the Beatles.
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Ellis: Like thousands of other little girls I was determined to be a ballerina but I never made it - probably a good thing as writing's less wearing on the joints.
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Ellis: I met my friend, Cal, on our first day at infant school and over the years we've progressed from school milk to something more alcoholic.
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Ellis: After doing the usual things like abolishing poverty, restoring justice and bringing back commonsense, I'd make libraries the hub of every community.
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Ellis: Anything by Ruth Rendell (and, of course, all of Shakespeare's plays).
RTE: What makes you angry?
Ellis: Thoughtlessness ... and EU fat cats living off our taxes while doing nothing particularly useful (however, I do like cats of the feline kind, fat or thin).
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
Ellis: Elizabeth I (because I admire her), Charles II (because he was a charmer), Richard III (because I'd like to see what kind of man he really was), Mozart (to provide the music) and Oscar Wilde (to keep the conversation going). Or alternatively, five good friends I can relax with without having to worry about all that royal protocol.
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Ellis: An arrogant, self-obsessed 'celebrity'.
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Ellis: My late mum led me into a life of crime by encouraging me to read her favourite mystery authors ... and I became hooked.
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
Ellis: On the water front at Dartmouth (where my Wesley Peterson books are set).
RTE: Sum up your latest book in no more than 12 words.
Ellis: Body snatching, family secrets, more twists and turns than a Devon lane!
