Sixty seconds with Brian Freeman...
Brian Freeman worked in marketing and PR before going it alone as a novelist. He is the author of the Lieutenant Jonathan Stride series.
RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
Freeman: I’m not nearly as scary as the photo on my web site makes me look.
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Freeman: Why are these islands always so restrictive about what you can bring? Who sets these rules? :o) Okay, I’ll stop whining. I guess I would take Land of the Living by Kristine W Moody, mysterious, and scary, like me.
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Freeman: An author! It’s true!
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Freeman: That would be my wife of 23 years, Marcia. She was my next-door neighbor in college and is still my best friend.
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Freeman: People who tell others what to do would have to spend a day in their shoes first.
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Freeman: I’d have to say TRINITY by Leon Uris. It was one of my all-time favorites when I was growing up. Of course, when I was growing up, I used to hold up books by Brian Freemantle and cover up the “tle” with my thumb. So I was a little odd.
RTE: What makes you angry?
Freeman: People who are quick to judge other people.
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
Freeman: I can invite five people to dinner, but I can only take one CD to an entire island? Okay, okay:
Robert Ludlum. First, I’d tell him how much I enjoyed his books. Then I’d ask him, now that he’s dead, to please stop writing them. I don’t need the competition.
Richard and Judy. Hey, I’m no fool, I want to lobby them to pick STALKED for their book club! (Do they count as two or one?)
Halle Berry. Did I mention I was no fool?
Marcia, my wife. Most people find her much more interesting than me. Plus, no way she’s letting me have dinner with Halle alone.
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Freeman: Anyone who looks as scary as my web site photo.
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Freeman: I had a wonderful composition teacher in 8th Grade who knew I enjoyed writing. She pretty much threw out the lesson plan for me. When I came to class, she told me to simply sit there and write my stories. Which I did. I thanked her in the acknowledgments to my first book, IMMORAL.
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
Freeman: London. So you guys better buy a lot of books!
RTE: Sum up your latest book in no more than 12 words.
Freeman: Obsession. Blackmail. Murder. In zero degrees. (That’s only six!)
