Sixty seconds with Jeremy Duns...
Jeremy Duns grew up mainly in Africa and Asia. After reading English Literature at Oxford University, he worked as a journalist. He now lives in Sweden and is the author of Free Agent and Free Country, the first two books in a trilogy of spy novels set during the Cold War.
RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
Duns: I'm British, live in Sweden, and spend my days trying to write exciting spy thrillers set in the Cold War.
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Duns: Probably Marvin Gaye's What's Going On. Can't I bring my iPod?
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Duns: I've wanted to be a writer since I was very young.
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Duns: Alex, who I met at school aged 13.
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Duns: Spy novels would be studied in schools.
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Duns: Too many to count! The Da Vinci Code, perhaps, because then I could buy my own desert island and take lots of iPods there. Seriously, though, The Great Gatsby would be nice to have on the CV.
RTE: What makes you angry?
Duns: Unprincipled journalism, rabble-rousing politicians, poor customer service, losing my keys.
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
Duns: Ian Fleming, Lawrence Durrell, Doris Lessing, Fela Kuti and Smokey Robinson. I think it might be fun. Smokey wouldn't say much, I suspect, but might be a calming influence on the others.
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Duns: Someone with a heart condition and a phobia of being stuck in lifts.
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Duns: Lots of things. My mother, who was an English teacher, and introduced me to reading from a very young age, and several teachers over the years. Also picking up an old spy thriller from the 1960s about ten years ago and being sucked into its universe.
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
Duns: Not sure. That desert island sounds tempting, but I love Stockholm.
RTE: Sum up your latest book in no more than 12 words.
Duns: 1969. Conflicted British agent Paul Dark is on the run in Nigeria.
