Andrew Taylor is the author of the Lydmouth series, as well as a number of standalones, including A Stain on the Silence and the recent Bleeding Heart Square. He has twice won the CWA's Ellis Peters Historical Dagger -- for The Office of the Dead in 2001 and The American Boy in 2003.
RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
Taylor: Like many novelists I secretly believe I may be God but in my case malign fate has wilfully polluted my divinity with so many blemishes that no one else appears to notice.
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Taylor: This morning's answer is Gidon Kremer's Hommage a Piazzola.
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Taylor: An author, for the wrong reasons.
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Taylor: Philip, whom I have known since I was four.
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Taylor: 4x4s and plastic windows would be restricted to those who need them.
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Taylor: Almost anything by David Mitchell, for a start.
RTE: What makes you angry?
Taylor: The violence of the intolerant.
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
Taylor: I hate this question. I began a list that started with Julie Christie and Jane Austen, but in some ways I think I'd prefer to have dinner with five of my great-great grandparents so we could all find out what we're like. It would be a very awkward occasion and might well lead to blows. Absolutely fascinating, though, if only for me.
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Taylor: Compulsive talkers who talk about themselves
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Taylor: Panic. The thought if I didn't do it now, I never would.
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
Taylor: The Forest of Dean.

Taylor: 1934: woman leaves husband, finds father, murder, love and too many fascists.
