Sixty seconds with Louise Ure...
Louise Ure's first book, FORCING AMARYLLIS, won the Shamus Award for best first novel. For her second, THE FAULT TREE, featuring blind car mechanic Cadence Moran, she learned to change a tyre on a 1966 Mustang while blindfolded, and even practised flying a single-engine plane with her eyes closed!
RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
Ure: Fifty-five and going much faster than that, with a complete inability to tell a story the way it really happened.
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Ure: Ah, it would have to be one of my own mixes, and would probably include some Amos Lee, Manhattan Transfer and Dixie Chicks. Maybe Madeline Peyroux, Kentucky Headhunters, and JJ Cale. Eric Clapton, of course. That should take care of all my moods.
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Ure: Perry Mason. Not his secretary/sidekick Della Street, mind you. Perry himself.
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Ure: ? My sister, Lee. She has all the character traits I don't have – all the traits I want. Together we make one really fine person.
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Ure: Libraries would be on every corner and red wine would be free. Oh, and I would have done away with all speed bumps.
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Ure: Hands down, it's Barbara Kingsolver's The Poisonwood Bible. Masterful use of changing POVs, incredibly descriptive writing, and a story that will stay with you forever.
RTE: What makes you angry?
Ure: The corrosive power of arrogance and ignorance combined.
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
Ure: Like John Connolly, my list would be made up of friends, not necessarily famous names. Let's see ... my sister, the wildland firefighter, the Alaskan fishing boat captain, the guy who made me laugh 25 years ago even though he was rejecting my advances ... And we did say somebody else was doing the cooking, right?
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Ure: A non-smoker.
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Ure: In one of those deep and important conversations after 9/11, a friend asked me what I'd always wanted to do but never done. My answer: to write a book. I started the next day. After all, who knows how much time any of us have left?
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
Ure: Right here in San Francisco. I like a place where both the weather and the people are temperate and tolerant.
RTE: Sum up your latest book in no more than 12 words.
Ure: A blind woman is the only witness to a murder. Sees nothing.
