Sixty seconds with Quintin Jardine...
Quintin Jardine was born in Scotland and worked as a journalist, government information officer, political spin-doctor and media relations consultant before becoming a crime fiction writer. He is the author of the Bob Skinner and the Oz Blackstone series.
RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
Jardine: 65 years hard labour, no time off for bad behavior.
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Jardine: The Rising, Bruce Springsteen. But I’d take it on my iPod, so that I wouldn’t be deprived of everything else he’s ever recorded, Born to Run, and the entire portfolios of Van Morrison, Stacey Kent, REM, Maggie Bell, Steely Dan, Counting Crows, Jackson Browne, James Taylor, Rachelle Ferrell, Ella Fitzgerald, Maria Callas, Pavarotti, Brad Paisley, Amanda Marshall, Paolo Nutini, Chet Baker, Jimmy Scott, the Stereophonics, Chet Baker, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Gardar Thor Cortes, and Tal Wilkenfeld. Hey, I have to assume that I could be on this island for quite some time. Oh . . . and a charger; I’ll need a charger.
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Jardine: Alive to tell the tale, in a nuclear-free world. After that, until I became a writer and could give up a career of trying to persuade intelligent people that shit was really sugar, and that it would make their lives better, I didn’t really know.
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Jardine: His name is Allan, I’ve known him for 43 years and he’s my son. My second oldest is two years younger, her name is Susie, and she’s my daughter.
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Jardine: All religious fundamentalists, whatever their faith, would be sterile. That way we’d wipe them out in a generation. It would be illegal to buy a listed company with borrowed money, then transfer the ensuing debt to that company. When any business declares a dividend, half of the money allocated should go to the relief of famine and disease in the Third World, before investors get a cent.
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Jardine: Dispatches, by Michael Herr. But I do *not* wish that I’d done the research.
RTE: What makes you angry?
Jardine: Intolerance. I can’t fucking stand it, okay!!!
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
Jardine: Tiger Woods, Bill Clinton, John F Kennedy, Madonna, Pope John XXIII.
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Jardine: Gordon Brown. Anyone who has ever shouted ‘Get in the hole!’ at a golf ball. Gordon Brown. Any member of the Glaser family, current owners of Manchester United Football Club.
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Jardine: Not what, but who. Her name was Irene, she was my first wife and she’s not alive any more.
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
Jardine: Gullane, in Scotland, and L’Escala, in Spain. Fortunately, I do.

Jardine: Based on people I like, in a place I love.
