Giancarlo De Cataldo, an Italian magistrate in Rome, is also a writer, translator, essayist, journalist, and scriptwriter for theatre, cinema, TV and radio. His novel Romanzo Criminale (2002) has been made into a film of the same name, directed by Michele Placido. He is the editor of Crimini: The Bitter Lemon Press Book of Italian Crime Fiction.

De Cataldo: When I go to sleep I ask to myself, what shall I invent tomorrow?

De Cataldo: The Essential Leonard Cohen.
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
De Cataldo: A father.
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
De Cataldo: Tonino De Giorgi from Taranto, Southern Italy, where I was born. He is owner of a bookshop and we grew up together.

De Cataldo: I was not a good football player, so I needed to invent something different for my future.
