Mons Kallentoft's love of literature stems from a time in his early teens when he was bedridden after a serious sports injury. He started work in the advertising industry and has also spent time as a journalist. His debut novel, Pesetas, was awarded the Swedish equivalent to the Whitbread Award. The book includes cocaine dealers and bankrobbers in Madrid and demonstrates his ample knowledge of the shady side of the Spanish capital. MIDWINTER SACRIFICE, the latest book in his series featuring Swedish detective, Malin Fors, is published in October 2011.
RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
Kallentoft: A restless hedonist, with a knack for telling stories.
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Kallentoft: I am more or less allergic to music, so I will take another book....
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Kallentoft: A football player or a chef.
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Kallentoft: My very dear friend, Rickard Wennerklint, we have known each other since childhood. Or Rolf Svensson, who is seventy.... he´s really, really old, as my kids say.
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Kallentoft: There would be no child abuse of any kind.
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Kallentoft: The Great Gatsby.
RTE: What makes you angry?
Kallentoft: Child abuse of any kind.
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
Kallentoft: Elena Arzak, Cormac McCarthy, David Hockney, Terence Mallick and Cathrine Deneuve.
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Kallentoft: Any fundementalist of any kind. They make for superboring company.
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Kallentoft: A sports accident, after which I had nothing to do but read. I was fourteen and had an accident jumping from high ground into water.
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
Kallentoft: Sydney is nice, but far away, Thailand is a wonder, but I will always be a stranger, Bali is magical, but in the hands of javanese mobsters, New York is the centre of the universe, but way to cold in winter, San Sebastian is the place for eating, but rainy and too small...the perfect place does and does not exist. So I am constantly restless, and hungry...
