Sixty seconds with Jonathan Kellerman...
Jonathan Kellerman was born in New York City and grew up in Los Angeles. He received a Ph.D in psychology and later worked with young cancer patients. His first published book was a medical text. His first novel was published in 1985 and since then he has written at least one book every year. Although no longer active as a psychotherapist, he is a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics and Psychology at University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine.
RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
Kellerman: I’m a constitutionally optimistic, perfectionistic, occasionally compulsive fellow.
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Kellerman: Any good recording of Bach’s brandenburg concertos.
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Kellerman: Never really wanted to grow up – as I tell my kids, maturity is highly over-rated. But I’ve always been drawn in two sometimes opposing, sometimes converging directions: art and science.
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Kellerman: My wife of 40 years, the esteemed novelist, Faye Kellerman.
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Kellerman: The notion of one person attempting to run anyone else’s life would be abolished magically.
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Kellerman: Oh, there are so many but let’s settle on the count of Monte Cristo.
RTE: What makes you angry?
Kellerman: Inconsiderate, meddlesome people.
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
Kellerman: If we’re talking past lives: a brilliant, though somewhat forgotten american psychiatrist named Milton Erickson, J.S. Bach, Buddy Holly, Sarah Bernhardt, Harpo Marx. If present day, Steve Martin, Mel Brooks, Don Rickles, Sasha Baron Cohen, Kathleen Madigan – are we picking up a trend, here?
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Kellerman: Yasser Arafat, dead or alive.
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Kellerman: No specific inspiration, as such; I just always loved to write and began pursuing it assiduously at age nine.
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
Kellerman: Right where I live now: California, New Mexico, New York City.
RTE: Sum up your latest book in no more than 12 words.
Kellerman: Explores the collision between severe mental illness and violence-lust.
