Private eye Lola Cruz has known what she wanted to do since she was in high school, when she used to follow her crush Jack Callahan and take photographs of him in compromising positions. She's got her dream job, even though her family doesn't approve and some of her co-workers at Camacho and Associates aren't too thrilled with her, either. Lola doesn't care; she just wants to work. When Manny Camacho gives her a case, she's enthusiastic. She just knows she can find Emily Diggs.

Unfortunately, when Lola finds Emily, Emily is dead. Lola tends to get very involved in whatever she does, sometimes more involved than she should and this case is a prime example. It doesn't help things a bit when Jack Callahan comes back to town and gets in the middle of her case. Is he interested in her? Where has he been and what's he been doing for ten years? Lola wants to know.

And then there's her boss, Manny Camacho, who is probably up there in Ranger territory (for those who read Evanovich). He's divorced, he's got a majorly sexy girlfriend, and he seems to be checking out Lola. This does not endear her to Sadie, who seems to have unusual pull with Mannie. What's with that?

Ramirez has written a well-plotted mystery with engaging characters. She can be laugh-out-loud funny. However, I frequently found it difficult to keep reading. Lola has the hots for Jack Callahan. Ramirez tells us that early on, and very believably. What wears very thin in a very short amount of time is her compulsion to KEEP telling us this, in great detail. Explicit sexual detail. We get it. Really, we do. Unfortunately, if the editors had cut those portions of the book, it would have been a novella not a book. If that doesn't faze you, read on. The rest of LA VIDA LOLA is well worth reading.
