So you've moved that 60s psychedelic rock poster about eight times and it would be nice to know if it's worth hanging on to. A new site (www.posterappraisal.com) started by Rudy Franchi of Antiques Roadshow might be the answer. The site offers free appraisals of not only rock posters, but also vintage travel, WWI & WWII, circus, vaudeville, concert posters as well. Actually, Rudy can answer questions about a wide range of collectibles: old advertising items, political buttons, lunchboxes - just about any collectible except records, comic books or baseball cards (there are excellent price guides recently published for all three of these categories). Visit the site and find out what information is needed and why this free service is being offered. And email me with small jpegs and descriptions at rudy@posterappraisal.com/.

May 12 2008

We have a little something for everyone this week, whether your tastes run to possible cannibalism in 1930s Ukraine or quilting in San Jose.

Several newcomers to the genre (and very different they are) attracted attention this week. Maddy Van Hertbruggen hopes Barbara Fister's IN THE WIND will be but the first in a series, finding it a strong and original work. Christine Zibas thought the first in a proposed series of quilting novels by Terri Thayer needed some work but had promise. I, on the other hand, was a bit disappointed in the highly-touted draw book for this week, CHILD 44, though I'd like to see what Tom Rob Smith does for an encore.

Plenty of old hands are on view this week too. R.D. Wingfield, who died last summer, has, alas, written his last DI Frost novel, reviewed here by Nick Hay, and Sue Grafton is back with another Kinsey Millhone. Sharon Wheeler found a lot not to like but ate it up anyway.

Other familiar figures, like John the Eunuch or Inspector Rutledge and his trusty haunt, Hamish, were greeted with enthusiasm by our reviewers. Less fortunate was China Bayles. Barbara Franchi wonders if Susan Wittig Albert's popular series is not past its sell-by date.

Two notable UK novels this week - Francis Fyfield's BLOOD FROM STONE and Patrick Lennon's STEEL WITCHES both found favour with our reviewers, and I was happy with TORONTO NOIR, another in the noir city series from Akashic Press.

So if you can't find something you like from this batch, you're very hard to please.

And as usual, once you've caught up on all the new stuff, there are plenty of books to be won in our weekly free draw.

Best, Yvonne

PS: For guidelines on how to submit books for review, please go to the ABOUT section of our site.

Our mascot and masthead is Smokey the Cat. Smokey the cat went to the great playground in the sky on April 29, 2008, at 3:30 p.m. He was about 13 years old, had diabetes and only 11 teeth left. He is much happier now. He will remain as our masthead and mascot.

MAY 14, 2008.

This week, we are giving away three copies of each of the following books: FIDELITY by THomas Perry, FROM DEAD TO WORSE by Charlaine Haris and SCREAM FOR ME by Karen Rose

In order to enter the draw, just click in the proper place, and your email will be addressed correctly. Just please watch your formatting. I can't promise to be able to decipher the message if it has extraneous material in it and you may miss out on a chance to win. The publishers also require a street address, rather than a PO box. If you leave out your mailing address entirely, you will be disqualified if your name is chosen, since we do not have time to track you down.

PLEASE, do not send in multiple entries. These are weeded out and at some point I will lose patience and eliminate ALL names that appear more than once. So take care.

Keep an eye on the left sidestack where our 'Sixty seconds with...' feature will appear weekly.

Thanks to all who have contributed to our success.

FIDELITY by Thomas Perry

Book Description

When Phil Kramer is shot dead on a deserted suburban street in the middle of the night, his wife, Emily, is left with an emptied bank account and a lot of questions. How could Phil leave her penniless? What was he going to do with the money? And, most of all, who was he if he wasn’t the man she thought she married?

Jerry Hobart has some questions of his own. It’s none of his business why he was hired to kill Phil Kramer. But now that he’s been ordered to take out Kramer’s widow, he figures there’s a bigger secret at work—and maybe a bigger payoff.

As they race to find the secret that Phil Kramer so masterfully hid, both Hobart and Emily must question where their true loyalties lie and how much they owe those who have been unfaithful to them. In FIDELITY, Thomas Perry delivers another riveting thriller. .

SCREAM FOR ME by Karen Rose

Book Description

For her exciting debut in hardcover, New York Times bestselling author Karen Rose delivers a heart-stopping suspense novel that picks up where DIE FOR ME left off, with a detective determined to track down a brutal murderer.

Special Agent Daniel Vartanian has sworn to find the perpetrator of multiple killings that mimic a 13-year-old murder linked to a collection of photographs that belonged to his brother, Simon, the ruthless serial killer who met his demise in DIE FOR ME. Daniel is certain that someone even more depraved than his brother committed these crimes, and he's determined to bring the current murderer to justice and solve the mysterious crime from years ago.

With only a handful of images as a lead, Daniel's search will lead him back through the dark past of his own family, and into the realm of a mind more sinister than he could ever imagine. But his quest will also draw him to Alex Fallon, a beautiful nurse whose troubled past reflects his own. As Daniel becomes attached to Alex, he discovers that she is also the object of the obsessed murderer. Soon, he will not only be racing to discover the identity of this macabre criminal, but also to save the life of the woman he has begun to love.

Just a note to tell you that Smokey the Cat went to that great playground in the sky on April 29 at 3:30 PM. He had been diagnosed with severe diabetes and we decided, that at the age of about 13, he didn't deserve to be made into a pincushion with blood testing and daily insulin. He also had lost almost 1/2 a pound in less than 2 weeks and had only 11 teeth left. We hope he is happier than he has been. We still house Radar the dog and are babysitting Rufaro, the toy poodle for an indefinite period of time. Rufaro weighs about 1/3 of Smokey. Even at the end, he was over 17 pounds.
