For several years California has been terrorized by a serial killer dubbed the "Frankenstein Killer," an individual who targets women because of a specific body part and then slaughters them horribly after having stolen it from them. The news media has now taken an interest in the case and reporter Tina Wong is getting a little too close to the case. The killer is becoming a bit nervous and needs to stop her before she creates irreparable damage to his plans.

Alison Shaw is your typical and ordinary California teenager. She has good friends and a set of divorced parents who, despite their differences, love her unconditionally. She has goals and dreams for the future, but everything with her will change after her mother marries Conrad Dunn, a widowed Beverly Hills plastic surgeon. He is a man who has a reputation for perfection and he does not like to settle for second best. Anybody who is anybody or wants to be anybody goes to him so that he can work his magic, but Alison cannot help thinking that the image that Conrad Dunn shows is only a façade. She will soon learn his secrets, and what she learns is not pretty.

John Saul knows how to create a creepy story that can send shivers down your spine and FACES OF FEAR does what it can with what it has. Its weakness is that the story is filled with just too many plot holes and glaring inconsistencies that do not make the story flow or believable. The book is just one quick thrill that does entertain a bit, but is less than satisfying overall.
