Madison Cross is a relatively new hire in the Philadelphia Crime Scene Unit. She is a crime scene technician who will quickly get a crash course in crime scene investigations. Philadelphia seems to be undergoing a killing spree as numerous bodies turn up in unusual locations. First there are several garbage bags found full of body parts. Then a body is discovered in the side of the road. It is obvious that this body had been thrown out of a moving vehicle. Then a shrivelled body is discovered. This body seems to have been cryogenically preserved; however, none of the organizations that do this procedure are missing any corpses. And finally a known gang member is discovered tortured and then brutally murdered. While the city of Brotherly Love does have a high murder rate, the number of murder victims found in unusual situations within a short period of time is far from normal. In addition, there is a connection between the dead gang member and a small town north of Philadelphia.

The murder of a gang member and the cryogenic corpse cause a territorial battle, as everyone wants a piece of the action. The Philadelphia PD want the murder investigations since they found the bodies; the Organized Crime Task Force want the cases since they believe the murders are due to gang actions they have been monitoring; and the Lawson Police Department, in the form of Sheriff Matt Boone, wants the cases since one of the murder scenes is in his town and has harmed his people.

As more and more bodies begin to pile up, Madison has her hands full processing the physical evidence found at the various scenes. While no one believes that all of these murders are connected, Madison finds proof that indicates that they may be. She must step outside her role as a technician to do some investigative work in order to find the killer and reveal the conspiracy. She must do this without being fired for not sticking to her job, without getting killed by the killer and without losing the friendships she has while a member of the CSU.

FREEZER BURN is the third book in the CSU Investigation series. It is not necessary to read the previous two books in order to follow this one. While there are a few allusions to the past, this background information is not necessary for the plot. As I have not yet read the previous books, this information might not have been explained previously and might be the focus of a future book.

FREEZER BURN reads like a made for television movie or series rather than as a novel. The secondary characters are not developed in great depth nor are they all that interesting. In fact the only character that is developed in any way is Madison Cross. As a television show works best when it has a single protagonist; the development of the Cross character as opposed to any other suggests why this feels as though it were made for television.

While FREEZER BURN was entertaining and provided a break from reality, this series is not one that I will read in the future.
