The tiny state of New Hampshire has the country’s first primary election in the circus better known as the presidential race. The world’s media and the focus of all turn to the state with regularity every four years. Possibly most of the inhabitants could do without the hoopla, but they likely do enjoy having their say before anyone else in the country.

Senator Jackson Hale of Georgia is one of the leading candidates for his party’s nomination. Normally, Lewis Cole – writer and former research analyst for the Department of Defense – is not terribly interested in politics. However, this year, someone very special to him, Annie Wynn, is one of the Senator’s most trusted aides. Annie is on the campaign trail with the senator’s party, and the campaign has brought her back home to New England.

Lewis attends a rally in his home town, mostly to support Annie rather than Hale. However, Lewis is present when someone attempts to shoot the candidate. Fortunately they miss but the bad news is that Lewis is implicated in the shooting. If he had not been ill with the flu and had gone outside to be sick and thus get captured on a video camera, Lewis might still be in jail.

Believing that he is still being watched, Lewis becomes embroiled in the murky waters of presidential politics. While idealists like Annie still believe in helping the best man to win the race, Lewis comes eye to eye with the dirty tricks and double-dealing that we have all come to expect from politics.

The story takes many twists and turns. The candidate’s wife turns out to be Lewis’ former girl friend back in college. She appeals to him for help as the action progresses. Lewis also has Felix, the shady sidekick, whose connections come in handy when there is dirty work to be done. Lewis may be on the side of law and order but he doesn’t flinch from going to the dark side when it’s necessary.
