TALKING MYSTERIES: A CONVERSATION WITH TONY HILLERMAN was previously published as WORDS, WEATHER AND WOLFMAN: CONVERSATIONS WITH TONY HILLERMAN. This book has been revised, corrected and now has several additions. These additions include sketches by a Native American based upon Tony Hillerman's novels.

TALKING MYSTERIES does contain an interview with Hillerman. This interview deals with several questions including how he writes a book, where he thinks the series is going and why he presents the information he does. Many of these questions stem from the fact that Hillerman uses Native American culture as a backdrop for his stories. The information he includes is accurate; however, he is not trying to provide an anthropological understanding of these peoples.

This book is not limited to an interview. It also contains a forward by Ernie Bulow explaining how he learned about Hillerman and his own opinion of this mystery series. Not surprisingly he is complimentary overall; however, he does point out that there are some small flaws in the books regarding culture. While Bulow is not Native American himself, he did teach on a reservation and embraced the families around him. Bulow also informs the reader how his opinion of Hillerman changed, as Hillerman became a better writer.

In addition, TALKING MYSTERIES contains a short story featuring Jim Chee - The Witch, Yazzie and the Nine of Clubs. This story has previously been published; yet, it is incredibly hard to find a copy of. As always, Chee manages to find the hidden clues and solve the mystery.

TALKING MYSTERIES: A CONVERSATION WITH TONY HILLERMAN is a book any die-hard Tony Hillerman fan would be proud to own. Hillerman is the bestselling author of the Jim Chee series. He has over a dozen novels to his name. Ernie Bulow worked on a reservation as a teacher, and currently writes reviews, teaches occasional classes and sells rare books.
