November 1 was the date of the first murder at the Dupayne Museum. The museum is at a small London site, dedicated to the 1910-1939 years. Adam Dalgliesh's friend, Conrad Ackroyd, writes about murder and is quite taken with the special museum space named The Murder Room. Christened this name because of the contents, the most notorious cases are displayed.

What will happen to the museum? Marcus, Caroline and Neville are the three siblings that must decide its fate. Marcus is the oldest son who early on is portrayed as a prestige seeker. Caroline involves herself with a school, successfully marketed to wealthy people so that their daughters may attain an excellent academic experience. Neville, a psychiatrist, never quite feels that he fits in with his two siblings. James Calder, the man who works on the history, has cited these three as being antagonistic.

A trustee meeting on October 30 at 3pm should determine the fate of the museum. On the following day is the first murder but not the last. Dalgliesh and his team become involved in the solution. Once again, Adam, Kate and Piers share their stellar conversations and discernment processes. What fine writing! There is also a brief peek at Adam and Emma's relationship for those of you that are reading this series in order.

I have not read a PD James book that I have enjoyed more than this one. Her descriptive powers are peak, strengthening and prevailing in all the characters for her 18th novel. The story is divided into four parts. Maintaining my perfect record of not being able to solve the crime until the end for PD James books, this was no exception.
