Sloane Carlisle takes her mind off the shattering news that the man she's always believed was her father -- isn't -- by having a one-night-stand with a stranger. Chase Chandler celebrates his liberation from a life-time of family obligations by having a one-night-stand with a stranger. If you think that's the end of the relationship between these two people, you're about two hundred pages off the mark.

Sloane goes back to her birth-mother's hometown to track down her biological father. Chase just happens to be from that town, and is asked by Sloane's step-mother to follow her and keep an eye on her. In return, Chase gets the story when it's time. And there is a story, because Sloane's step-father is running for political office, and the story of Sloane's life will be a story with many ramifications for all concerned.

Sloane goes to her father's house in Yorkshire Falls, which promptly blows up. Chase is there to protect her, at which point they both realize that the sparks from the one-night-stand are still burning strongly. They decide, independently, to continue the relationship "just for right now". Chase's mother Raina is match-making like mad. Sloane's father is in hiding.

We all know that Chase and Sloane are going to wind up together; what makes the book interesting and worth reading is seeing all the obstacles that persist in turning up and watching Chase and Sloane work their way past these obstacles - separately and together.

This is book three in a series. Book one was THE BACHELOR, book two was THE PLAYBOY. I will be keeping my eye out for both these books. If they are as entertaining a read as THE HEARTBREAKER, I won't be disappointed.
