The peaceful life in the small town of Medicine Creek, Kansas, is disrupted by the discovery of a body in a cornfield. The body is mutilated and lays within a circle of crows on stakes and a ring of corn stalks.

Special agent Pendergast, a descendant of Sherlock Holmes, shows up to investigate, declaring this is the work of a serial killer.Further killings occur with grotesque results. The townspeople begin to believe that these murders are somehow connected with the 19th century massacre of a band of outlaws by Indians.

Pendergast hires Carrie Swanson, a rebellious teenager as his guide and driver. The local cops and politicians don't like Pendergast digging into the town's secrets. But when Carrie is dragged off by the killer into a massive cave system, they unite to try to rescue her.

This is a fast paced captivating story. The suspense builds up throughout the story to the climax. There are graphic descriptions of the gruesome murders. The study of the character of the rural sheriff is thoughtful. Pendergast is shown to have human flaws. His relationship to Carrie is well executed. The authors have successfully evoked the oppressive heat of the plains. This is a nightmare scenario with a killer with supernatural speed and strength which threatens the entire population.
