You might think a book based in time during the French Revolution would be boring, but let me guarantee you that this one is not boring.

Jubilee is a young, American girl living with her parents in Paris. Her father, Neville, is a businessman who has two partners. Unbeknownst to him, one of the partners, Larousse, is mixed up in illegal slave trade. When Neville discovers the deception, a plot is devised to have him and all his family murdered. Jubilee is the only one to survive. Jake, her father’s other partner, is blamed for the carnage and even Jubilee believes he is involved.

Jubilee is held captive and is quite alone in the world until she meets Marie. They both are held prisoner and seek a way of escape. They form a friendship that may be the only thing that can save them both. As the story unravels, Jubilee struggles to remain alive and keep her sanity. The book is a study of the best and the worst in the human spirit and it is also a fine love story.

Ms. Cogan has delivered a well written, engrossing novel of the struggle of life and death, the desire for survival against all odds, and the never-ending flame of love. She has taken a time in history that is filled with pain and death and places her characters squarely in the middle of all the chaos. She then gives them an additional private struggle. Either or both of the situations could easily destroy all the characters involved. At any moment, life could end.

Ms. Cogan made me care very much about Jubilee and all the characters that supported her and struggled along with her. She has provided a very enticing story that won’t let you turn loose of one page until you have started to read the next. I enjoyed it and look forward to more works from Ms. Cogan.
