Catherine's famous uncle, Malcolm Blount, wrote scary science fiction books. The only book she ever read of her uncle's had thoroughly scared her. When Catherine Carmichael was asked to be present for the reading of his will, she decided she must go. This adventure of going to New York and leaving her established life is a big departure for Catherine. She has been filling in as a concert pianist at the London Symphony Orchestra. It has been twenty years since the disappearance of her father and her mother refuses to discuss that part of her life. There has always been a tremendous void and a sense of wondering, so Catherine wants to find answers about that time period.

When Catherine arrives at the gothic looking mansion, she meets the others who have been summoned for the reading of the will. In the interval of seeing the building, she has slight memories of a past which was not such a happy time. First she sees some ghostlike looking servants. Catherine meets the gathered participants: the attorney, her uncle's literary agent, a cousin who she did not know existed and a drop-dead gorgeous hunk of a movie star. When they listen to a taped message from Malcolm Blount, they all realize there are strange requests placed for each one of them. The reading of the will shows how demented Malcolm was. As the story progresses, you will see a romance bud and you will also see everyone reminded of their horrendous losses.

Disappearances, ghosts and strange things that go bump in the night are not uncommon. One of the phrases that will give you a feeling of the atmosphere of this story is "the rusty hinges cry out as if in pain" (page 77).

The story's characters continue to search for their answers and for past secrets until all the answers become crystal clear. These answers are both haunting and evil.

Emily LaForge is the pen name for Jill Jones.
