MAN IN THE MIDDLE is Ken Morris’ first book. MAN IN THE MIDDLE explores the corruption and greed that control the stock market and the powerful investment firms in this world. Peter Neil’s life has been one finical struggle after another. When the book opens his mother has just died in an auto accident and he now faces an overwhelming amount of debt that comprises her estate. Out of the blue Jason Ayers, an old family friend, offers him both a job with a prestigious investment firm and to clear away some of this debt. Peter takes the job and quickly excels with the company. He is able to pay off the remaining debt as well as purchase a condo and expensive car. Unfortunately, Peter finds himself involved with illegal practices, which begin to cause feelings of guilt. Throughout this struggle, people asking about information his mother had, involving the illegal activities, of his new firm, haunt Peter. Peter must determine where his loyalties lie before he and his friends are murdered.

Morris has written a fast paced thriller that both explores the world of stocks as well as explains it. He has taken the knowledge that he gained while working on the market and made it more exciting to the general reading audience. Unlike the stereotypical thriller, MAN IN THE MIDDLE does not fall prey to attention getting devices and other “blockbuster” features. There is action and adventure contained with the book; however, the majority of it is plausible within the setting. Our hero does not suddenly gain superhuman powers or commando training. Peter merely tries to correct a wrong without getting himself killed.

MAN IN THE MIDDLE does contain a subplot involving a love interest; however, the book does not follow that caveat that sex sells. Peter is a not the most committed guy yet he also does not have an overactive sex life. Rather than include gratuitous sex scenes, Morris rarely goes into details and the scenes included are tied up with the overall plot.

MAN IN THE MIDDLE provides an entertaining look at the business world that few of the general public understand. Without giving into general pressures within the entertainment world, this book is both engaging and informative.
