Thanks to the Klingenshoen fortune (6 billions) which James Mackintosh Qwilleran inherited he is the richest man in northeast central U.S.

Thanks to the Klingenshoen Foundation which purchased the old Limburger mansion and refurbished it as a country inn in Bixby, Lori and Nick Bamba realize their dream of being innkeepers.

It comes as no surprise that Qwill, news columnist for the Pickax Moose County Something, agrees to spend a week at the Nutcracker Inn when Lori complains that the Inn is haunted. Accompanied by his two Siamese cats, Koko and YumYum, he settles down to enjoy the tranquility of Black Creek with its population of squirrels.

That tranquility is broken with the discovery of the body of one of the guests of the inn floating in the creek. Gold nuggets found in his pockets lead Qwill to wonder about possible forbidden gold mining in the Black Forest Conservancy.

Qwill's search for the murderer and the source of the gold lead to illegal logging in the Conservancy, and its ramifications.

In the pursuit of additional material for his columns Qwill uncovers the reason for the haunting: a Hatfield-McCoy type feud between the owner of the Limburger house and a former friend.

We are also involved with Qwill in Gilbert and Sullivan musicals, doll house furniture, wood spirits, and black walnut cuisine. There is a wealth of interesting information about these activities.

The story skillfully entwines the mystery with a wealth of characters and a portrayal of small own life. It is an enjoyable pleasant read; sure to please cat fanciers.
