Jeffery Deaver is a terrific writer and a good story teller. Here's another winner in his short series featuring the brilliant quadriplegic criminalist, Lincoln Rhyme, formerly of the New York Police Department. This time Rhyme is up against a stone killer, he of the title, who has been contracted to eliminate witnesses to crimes by a successful arms dealer. Protect the witnesses and trap the killer. Both killer and pursuer are clever, unscrupulous, and dedicated above all else to the task at hand.

The pace is gripping, the characterizations are enthralling and it's a good story you'll want to read in as few sittings as possible. Deaver logically compresses the entire story into a forty-eight hour period and screws the tension as high as you can stand it. Deaver uncorks a couple of fine surprises in this one and reveals more about Rhyme as a man and a human being--there is real development of the character here. I had trouble with a couple of the actions which strain credulity, but Deaver is such a strong, adept writer and teller of tales, those lapses are easily forgiven. I give this one a strong recommendation for any reader who finds forensic procedure interesting, and resonates to the battles of the intellect.
