Andrew Klavan is a marvelous writer. Read all of his books. End of review. Well, it could be, anyway. The above covers the essentials.

The narrator of Man and Wife is Cal Bradley. He has a happy life. He is married to Marie, whom he adores, and who adores him. They have three great children. He is happy with his job as a psychiatrist and president of a private mental health facility.

Into this idyllic life comes Peter Blue. A local minister persuades Cal to see him after Peter hit his girlfriend, set fire to a church, and pointed a gun at the policeman investigating. The policeman wants to throw the book at Peter, but the minister is convinced that Peter is a strongly spiritual person who will not commit such crimes again and who will commit suicide if he remains in prison. Cal meets with Peter and agrees with the minister. He is able to get Peter committed to his facility for thirty days. During that time a murder is committed with Peter as a suspect, and Cal faces moral dilemmas of the worst kind.

Klavan's narrator Cal is one of the best characters in a modern novel. From the first the reader feels like he knows Cal, and trusts Cal to tell the truth. Peter is also an excellent character, perhaps a bit too idealized. The problems Cal faces challenge him to the utmost, and the reader with him.

Andrew Klavan is a marvelous writer. Read all of his books.
