Although she's an experienced writer, this is Sparkle Hayter's first novel and it shows in the plot and some of the logic. Which is not to say this is a bad book. On the contrary, it's funny, shows incisive wit and the author's keen ability to observe and report the real-life foibles of the human animal. And nearly everyone in this book acts like an unthinking, uncaring animal a good deal of the time. That's one of my problems with the novel, but that doesn't stop me from laughing most of the way through it. Robin Hudson is a reporter for the fictional All News Network. She's being punished for social ineptitude in the White House, by being forced to serve on the Special Reports unit of the network. It's where the sleazoid-tabloid tendencies of the network are stored. Of course, according to her immediate co-workers, that's also where the major money-making function of the network goes on. The thin plot concerns murder, possible blackmail, possible unusual sexual acts, and a host of other activities and proclivities most of which are considered impolite to discuss above a whisper. Hayter takes the reader on an extremely fast-paced ride, replete with great numbers of witty observations, and stand-up-comedic one-liners, most with an ironic or unusual twist. It's well-written and a lot of fun, especially if hyper-social comedy acts are your thing. INNER PASSAGES A SUPERIOR MYSTERY http://www.Minnesotacrimewave.org
