What really happened to 17 year old Laura Buchman is the main plot for this story. Investigation becomes a passion for Bubbles Yablonsky. This murder happened ten years ago and was mistakenly called a suicide. Employed at the House of Beauty, Bubbles listens to the gossip and news of this small town. The beauty salon was one of the last places Laura had gone before she died. She requested her hair to be dyed black because she wanted to look right when she sang back up for a singer she idolized. It did not make sense for Laura to kill herself with this plan on her agenda. While you are finding the answers to this mystery, fasten your seat belt!

Bubbles Yablonsky reminds me a little bit of a Dolly Parton look-alike, who works very hard to look the way she does. She takes a slice out of the 60's with huge teased hair, tight skirts and/or tight anything, very high heels and lots of gum popping. If you are judgmental, you may just look at the surface and think that this character is an inclusive flake. Let me tell you a little about Bubbles' life before you make your decision.

Part of the family unit was comprised of an ex-husband, Dan, and a free spirited mother. These two add more than a slice of life! Dan has married money and decided he didn't want to pay any more alimony. The judge agrees with this decision with the exception that Dan needs to support any education that his ex-wife wants to study. And, study, she did. Six year later, Bubbles has taken many, many classes - not too successfully, but she was able to spend $18,000.00 of Dan's money. This fact did make her happy. Then there is her mother who is first introduced to the reader when she calls her daughter from jail. She has been picked up with a shoplifting charge. In spite of all she has going against her, Bubbles' resilience will amaze you. She keeps on putting one foot in front of the other. Power, humor and you never know what is going to happen next is all involved in the escapades of Bubbles. It will be interesting to see how you feel about Bubbles at the beginning of the book and then at the end of the mystery. She is one gutsy lady! Enjoy the read.
