When Bobby Katz, her personal trainer at the glitzy Hollywood health club is found shot to death, Juliet Applebaum has difficulty believing the police verdict of suicide. Juliet has retired from her job as a public defender to be a stay-at-home mother to her two children: 4 year old Ruby and 2 1/2 year old Isaac. She finds her role confining and at times unrewarding, though her screen writer husband, Peter, takes over their activities part of the time. She obtains Bobby's laptop and in searching through his e-mails and files finds he had learned that he had been adopted as a baby by the Katz family , all of whom were far above him in accomplishments. He had also learned that he was a carrier of the TaySachs disease. Jullet traces his birth mother who claims Bobby was the result of an affair when her husband was in Vietnam and gave him up for adoption to avoid discovery. There are many conflicting stories, but Juliet with the aid of Hockey, retired LAPD detective, eventually learns the truth. This is a quick read, full of fast dialogue, with the antics of two rambunctious children bedeviling their mother. There is a wealth of information about the TaySachs disease. This is an amusing account of the efforts of a woman trying to juggle her role as a stay-at-home mother with her desire for a career.
