Jim Quilleran, Moose County journalist, has settled in his winter residence in Pickax with his Siamese cats, Koko and YumYum.

Pickax is suffering from an autumn drought and the residents are hoping for a big snow storm.

There are a series of fires in the abandoned mine shafts around Pickax which are attributed to the dry brush.

When a volunteer fire watcher is killed, followed by the death of a local builder in an accident, Quilleran begins to believe the fires to be arson and connected to the two deaths.

With the assistance of Koko and YumYum who constantly give him hints about the crimes, Quilleran is able to find the truth.

This is the 23rd in the "Cat Who" series. It is a delightful light read, a relief from more serious mysteries.

The author has successfully evoked the sense of the small town where everybody knows everybody and knows everybody's business. There is a continuing cast of eccentric and enjoyable characters. And,of course for cat lovers there are Koko and YumYum,two most unusual felines.
