For almost 25 years, Victoria Houston has been recording the mysteries in Loon Lake, Wisconsin, populated by her well-developed characters, including Lew Ferris, now Sheriff, Doc Paul Osborne, a retired dentist, and Lew's close friend and fishing guide Ray Pradt.

Ms Houston introduced these three characters in her first Lake Loon Mystery, DEAD ANGLER, in 2000. Dr. Osborne was the protagonist in this series, with close relationships with Lew and Ray, who worked together to solve a murder. In an evolving twist, Ms Houston shifted perspectives in 2022, beginning the Lew Ferris series. This new direction features the Sheriff as the protagonist, consulting with Doc and Ray when needed.

The third Lew Ferris mystery begins with a pickleball player shot while practicing with his partner in preparation for an upcoming play date. Sheriff Ferris suspects a stray hunter's bullet may have killed the player until the dead man's pickleball partner and mistress is also shot on the very same practice court.

Now, the sheriff calls the state's forensic experts to help her and Doc figure out what's happening. Lew also recruits Ray, an astute tracker, to check out the pickleball court and surrounding area for clues since both players were murdered there.

A variety of suspects emerge as the investigating team uncovers clues in the first player's will and a witness to elements of the second murder. And then there's the fishing. An avid fisherwoman, Ms Houston includes interludes describing her characters' fly-fishing escapades between tracking down clues and interviewing suspects.

While AT THE EDGE OF THE WOODS is the third in Ms Houston's Lew Ferris series, it is the 22nd novel featuring these three characters. It continues the fascinating visits to Lake Loon—murder and fishing with comfortable folks.
