Whitney and Buck win the bid for the historic fire station in Nashville's Germantown community. Just as they begin renovation, a nearby neighbor approaches them for help. She owns the "right half of her building," which she maintains in excellent condition, and asks Whitney to help her with the disrepair of the left side. The challenge is to convince the seven owners (children of the original, now deceased owner) to sell the property so she and Buck can flip it after they rehabilitate it.

After finalizing the townhouse purchase, Whitney and Buck have two properties to renovate, and Whitney is planning her upcoming wedding. When Whitney goes to work at the fire station, she discovers it is on fire. As firefighters deal with putting that out, Whitney goes around the block to work on the townhouse only to find that someone has broken in and vandalized the interior.

More bad news. Joanna Hartzell, owner of the "right side," shows up at the fire station, collapses, and dies. Renovation at the fire station is on hold while the police determine what poisoned Joanna. The police are also investigating who might have vandalized the townhouse.

There is no shortage of suspects for the damage to the townhouse and perhaps the fire, as it becomes known that the seven owners (brothers and sisters) are unreasonably unhappy with the sale of the townhouse. One owner held out for $500 more; another got $32 more. The outcome: all threaten Whitney and Buck.

Diane Kelly writes a complex mystery involving familiar characters in murder, suspected arson, and vandalism. And to make things a little more interesting, Whitney plans to hold her wedding in the newly renovated fire station. As usual, one favorite character, the cat Sawdust, has dedicated chapters sharing his take on this adventure – a fun addition to the House-Flipper series.
