A famous painter named Alicia Berenson seemed to have the perfect life: a thriving career, a loving husband, and a comfortable home. One night, Alicia shoots her husband, Gabriel, five times in the face. Alicia never spoke another word. After being admitted to the psychiatric hospital dubbed "The Grove," Alicia and her infamy were slowly fading into obscurity until psychotherapist Theo Faber enters her life.
Theo is obsessed with discovering why Alicia ceased to speak, but without the sole witness verbally detailing the events of that fateful night, Theo must embark on his own investigation. Theo gradually unravels the truth by analyzing Alicia's haunting paintings and dark family history that surprisingly mirrors his own. The line that Theo should be drawing between doctor and patient quickly grows hazy.
I simply could not put THE SILENT PATIENT down and I ended up reading the novel in its entirety in one sitting. Michaelides' first novel is totally enthralling. The pace is gripping as clues and hints are dropped for readers like breadcrumbs on every page, and yet I truly had no idea where the plot was heading until the last few chapters. THE SILENT PATIENT is an original, slow-burning psychological thriller with a stupefying ending that is as shocking as it is expertly crafted. I can't wait to read whatever Michaelides writes next.
