Molly Murphy Sullivan is depressed. As a result of a very trying time in San Francisco, she miscarried a baby she wasn't even aware she was carrying. Daniel, her husband is working in Washington and she is away from her friends helping her mother-in-law recover from a serious illness. But things are looking up for Molly. Her husband is to join them for the holidays so their family will all be together again. But just like that, plans change when the mother-in-law is invited to visit an old friend's family for the holidays. So Molly returns home to New York City expecting to spend a quiet holiday with her family. Daniel arrives home from Washington and before they have even settled in, he hears from his mother that her friend would like to extend an invitation for Molly, Daniel and their son Liam also to come to the country for Christmas.

Upon arriving at the country home, they were struck immediately that their hosts were not there to greet them and surprised to find that they plus Daniel's mother were the only house guests. As things go along, it becomes increasingly clear that there is a great deal of unhappiness in the family. They soon discover that ten years before, the three year old only daughter of the hosts apparently dressed herself, walked out of the house and vanished. No trace of her was ever found either alive or dead. There were only the little girl's footprints leading from the house and no ransom note was ever received. What had become of Charlotte?

Molly soon sets her mind to try to solve the case. And solve the case she does, but along the way she unearths several deeply guarded family secrets. There are also couple of surprises thrown in to confuse the picture.

This is the sixteenth book in the series, and I believe this is my favorite of all of the Molly Murphy books thus far.
