Comparisons to GONE GIRL abound in blurbs on the cover of Sabine Durrant's UNDER YOUR SKIN. Justifiably so. In terms of riveting, can't-put-it-down mysteries, this book absolutely qualifies.

Gaby Mortimer, wife, mother and co-host of TV show Mornin' All, discovers a young woman's dead body on her morning run. Thus begins a series of events that threaten to unhinge Gaby's marriage, her career, her entire life. She becomes the obsessive focus of a police detective's investigation of the crime. His investigative ABC is Assume Nothing, Believe No One, Check Everything. How can she defend herself against such scrutiny? Why doesn't her husband answer her messages?

Naturally, the press is all over the story once Gaby is actually arrested for the crime. When she is released on bail, should she trust one reporter with an exclusive in order to drive the others away? Can she enlist him to aid her in an investigation of her own?

Durrant's prose provides an easy, flowing read with characters to believe in and a plot that draws you in from page one. The plot provides credible twists and complications and a conclusion that cannot be anticipated, no matter how many mysteries you've read. This is the sort of book you want to tell your friends about, to be the one who recommended it to others.

Sabine Durrant currently contributes to the Guardian where she was once features editor and formerly served as literary editor on the Sunday Times. The Guardian blurb provides an accurate description:

“UNDER YOUR SKIN rapidly unravels into a maelstrom of tension and paranoia, as Durrant draws a disturbing picture of how easy it is for the most perfect life to implode… if the mark of a good thriller is the compulsion to reread it immediately on finishing, to see if clues can be spotted second time round, then UNDER YOUR SKIN has it, in spades.”

I couldn't agree more.
