As Caroline McBride walked into the US Capitol for her appointment with Senator Lionel, she was thinking about how far she'd come. She was the top girl in the top escort service in Washington. With her top ratings on TrickAdvisor.com, she could ask any amount of money for her services and be assured of all the work she could handle. But this wasn't the goal. The goal was to find the right man to cultivate into her ticket out. Her goal was to marry one of her customers. Unfortunately for Caroline, her dreams of a different life ended abruptly as she plunged off the balcony of the Senator's private hideaway.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Anna Curtis is in the middle of her first self-defense class when the call comes in summoning her to the Capitol. A woman has fallen from a balcony under suspicious circumstances and Anna's boss in the Sex Crimes division wants her to get to the scene before the homicide unit. For Anna, a high profile case like this could propel her up the career ladder.

Jack Bailey, the US Attorney and head of the Homicide Unit, also rushes to the scene. The balcony the woman fell from belongs to a Senator up for reelection - an election that has career implications for Jack's future.

On the other side of town, as word spread of Caroline's death, ripples of fear spread through the escort service community. Caroline's roommate was racked with guilt, her boss was puzzled and the whole sex-for-hire trade was fearful.

Leotta uses her experience as a former Washington sex crimes prosecutor in writing her series. She has taken an actual case and used it as a basis for her well-constructed novel which takes readers into the world of prostitution inside the Beltway. Her experience especially shows in the details. Her characters are strong and quite believable. When various interdepartmental struggles on jurisdiction issues pop up, Leotta walks readers through the way jurisdiction is decided. Another way her experience shows is the very detailed way the case is worked. From how search warrants are executed to the way evidence is gathered, Leotta makes sure her characters have all of the details done correctly. And she accomplishes this without lecturing her readers.

This is the second book in the series, though it is not necessary to have read the first book in order to enjoy DISCRETION. This series is an interesting mix between a police procedural and a political suspense with a touch of romance thrown in as well.
