A very bad man Eve Dallas put away many years ago, in fact, her first arrest, has escaped from prison and has vowed to kill Dallas for what she did. He flees to Dallas, Texas where he kidnaps a woman who had been one of his early victims, released when the police caught up to him. Dallas and Roarke head south, determined to find the murderer before he can kill again. It's an arduous job and the killer has three women as bait before they catch up with him.

In this book Eve Dallas returns to her roots. Dallas is the city where she was found, the first city she can remember, and the source of her name. She also goes back to her early days as a police officer. All sorts of disturbing and unsettling feelings are created and Dallas has to fight them as well as the killer. Roarke keeps her centered and sane while she tries to fight these unpleasant memories as well as find the killer before he murders again.

This follows the pattern of all of Robb's books featuring Lieutenant Eve Dallas but that does not mean it is not a captivating and enthralling tale. Even when you know what to expect Robb has the ability to draw the reader in, to create suspense about what may possibly happen and enjoy the story from start to finish.

The plot is straightforward, no complications or tangles or twists. It is just a matter-of-fact police procedural with one difference. It takes place in the future, not the far distant future but just a little while from now. Most of what exists will be familiar to the reader, but there are some things, like individual flying cars, that mark it as another time. But underneath this, it is the story of a cop, targeted by a bad guy, trying to find and arrest him.

Dallas is a familiar character if the reader knows any of these stories. She is in her mid-thirties, beautiful, smart, and very insecure about her personal life. Her past haunts her some of the time and she has occasional nightmares stemming from it. But she is a brilliant police officer and, now that she has accepted him, a fine wife to her sidekick, Roarke. He is one of the richest men in the world so he can afford to indulge her in every way. He is strong and, like Eve, survived a very bad childhood. The killer, Isaac McQueen is evil incarnate, willing to torture and kill and enjoying every bit of it. If these all sound stereotypical, it is because they are. But Robb brings them to life all the same.

Robb writes romance fiction under another name and the reader/listener must expect a certain amount of graphic sex. While in the printed version it is possible to skip these if one chooses, they cannot be avoided in the audiobook version.

This is part of a series and I would strong recommend that you read or listen to the series in order. There are changes, things happen, people meet each other, and all of this makes more sense if you learn it in chronological order.

The reader of this book, Susan Ericksen, has read all the other Eve Dallas books I have listened to and she is very fine. She captures the sense of the characters and brings the story alive, but she does not intrude into the story. She just takes a very interesting book and makes it better.
