Twenty-two years apart, two young children are kidnapped off busy London streets on their way home. The latest is 5-year-old Matthew Faraday, a red-haired, freckle-faced boy. When psychotherapist Freida Klein reads about the abduction, she feels a jolt of recognition. One of her patients, a mild-mannered man with panic attacks, has been describing his urges and dreams: those of having a young, red-haired son.

Klein, in her mid-thirties, makes an unlikely detective: she seems cold, even unemotional, at times. For the most part, she leads a solitary life, only slowly opening herself to other people. And she spends her nights walking the cold streets of London, a process that helps her clear her head. Yet once she goes to police with her suspicions, Detective Chief Inspector Malcolm Karlsson involves Klein in the investigation.

BLUE MONDAY starts off slowly and even feels a bit disjointed in the beginning. But once the novel's threads start to come together the novel picks up pace. Part police procedural and part psychological thriller, the story moves quickly, as Karlsson and Klein desperately seek the missing Matthew. While the authors, husband-wife writing duo Nicci Gerrard and Sean French, have a long list of thrillers to their names, this one is different. The story delves deeper into the main protagonist's life, giving us a sense of Klein's complex life and her own dysfunctional family, but holding back some secrets. There's a reason for this: BLUE MONDAY is the first in a series that will follow Klein (at least through the other days in the weeks). If the first book is any indication, crime fiction fans will have another strong series to look forward to.
