Atticus O'Sullivan is still recuperating from his battles with the Celtic gods (see HOUNDED). One of the results of winning those battles is that many, many people want him to kill Thor. Not just Norse gods, but all kinds of religious VIPS seem to want Thor taken out. Even his vampire lawyer wants Thor dead. Atticus, on the other hand, would prefer to avoid that particular mess entirely.

The local coven of witches is preparing to sign a nonaggression treaty with Atticus; this would make life easier for all concerned. Before this can happen, another coven invades Tempe. Naturally the first coven is very unhappy about this. Atticus doesn't want to get involved in this mess either, until he realizes that he has personal history with the invader and it is not good history. Then a fallen angel has decided that a local high school makes for a good buffet, and a group of Bacchants descend from Las Vegas. The local pagan population (including vampires, werewolves, and ghouls) doesn't like any of this and fights back on all fronts. It gets messy.

HEXED is the second in a three book series. The first was HOUNDED, the third will be HAMMERED. Hearne writes an amusing and well-plotted book involving all kinds of folk from the non-human section of the world's religions and myths. His concept of the possible inter-relationships between gods of different pantheons is interesting and believable.

Atticus himself is a trip. He has acquired an apprentice, a young woman whose verbal ability is amusing and who tests his patience. And his moral code; she is very attractive. His neighbor across the street, the bane of Oberon's existence (Oberon is an Irish wolfhound with a personality all his own), is not at all what he seems; this comes in handy when the big showdown is at hand. Hearne writes battle scenes very well; one could easily see this series growing into a decent movie. Casting it would be great fun.
