Logan Finch, in-house lawyer to a firm specialising in covert protection, is no stranger to tragedy. His girlfriend was murdered leaving him to bring up a teenaged daughter whom he barely knows. Now Logan is embarking on a new relationship with DC Rebecca Irvine and trying to balance this with his responsibilities to his daughter, Ellie.

His friend and colleague, close personal protection specialist, Alex Cahill, is hired to protect film star, Tara Byrne, from threats that she will come to harm on the night of her latest film premiere. At the same time, Irvine is attending a concert given by her former boyfriend, rock star and recovering drug addict, Roddy Hale. He is injured in a fall from the stage and Irvine does her best to help him, but unbeknownst to her, bigger trouble in waiting in the wings as a professional killer is on her heels and she is the target.

I struggled with this book in the early stages, mainly having some trouble disentangling the characters from each other and fixing them in my mind as individuals. The confusion was aided to an unfortunate similarity of some surnames and it took me a while to tell characters called Hudson and Hanson apart but once I was past that barrier, the story gathered pace at a remarkable rate and when Moffat embarked on action scenes there was no holding him back.

The description of the chaos caused by a car bomb in a crowded place was shocking and effective, particularly the inevitably delayed response of police and paramedics while specially trained officers sought to ascertain whether more devices were likely to detonate. From that point onwards, the action never slacked off and my initial doubts about the book were very firmly put to bed.

Even though much of what happens in this book is linked to its predecessor, DAISYCHAIN, Moffat handles that without resorting to information dumps. Although some of my early confusion may have been tied to the fact that the characters had already been established in an earlier book, that hurdle was relatively quickly overcome. I'll definitely be seeking out DAISYCHAIN as well.
