Madison Rose came to L.A. from Boise to, as so many others have done, make a new start. She's been a waitress in a diner, doing her best to get by. One of the regulars, a guy named Bobby, abducts her one night and Madison is pretty sure she's going to be dead in a horrible way pretty soon. That's what usually happens to women when duct tape and deep woods are involved. Then a vampire arrives and Bobby is the one left dead on the ground.

Madison wakes up in the home of Dodie and Doug Dedham. The names are a little cutesy, and so is Dodie. Doug has a bit of a twisted sense of humor, one that Madison seldom appreciates. They are the vampires who rescued her. They, and their police buddy Detective Michael Notchey, want Madison to lie low. Apparently most of the police think the serial killer is in custody. Some of the vampires in LA disagree and Detective Notchey is working with them to find the real killer.

Madison decides, somewhat reluctantly, to work with/for the Dedhams. They need someone to check things out while they are unable to do so. Those pesky hours between sunrise and sunset are tough for them. Madison interacts with a wide variety of people, some vampires and some wanna-be vampires. As with many sub-cultures, there are subtle layers to the social strata, and power struggles among the various leaders. The rules are changing, and some of the vampires are not at all happy about this.

Jaffarian's writing is competent, and her characters are (mostly) delightful. Her creation of the vampire sub-culture rings true. Madison is interested and repulsed, intrigued and scared - believable reactions. The plot works for this book. Fans of Jaffarian's Odelia Grey series may want to venture into this new world; vampire buffs will almost certainly want to read more about Madison and her new world.
