Moira O'Donnell had one purpose in life. She was to be a sacrifice for her mother Fiona in Fiona's search for immortality. Moira managed to escape, leaving behind her younger sister Serena. Serena has spent her entire life in Moira's shadow, and this didn't change when Moira left. Therefore, there are issues.

Moira has a new purpose, one just as likely to get her killed. Her mission now is to stop Fiona, stop her completely. Fiona has accumulated a great deal of power in the underworld, power that she intends to use. Her immediate plan is to unleash the Seven Deadly Sins into the world, under her control. Moira and her cohorts manage to disrupt this plan but not completely. The Sins are loose, just not under anyone's control. This is so not a good thing.

Moira has help. There is a group within the Catholic Church devoted to fighting Fiona and her kind; one of them is in California to help Moira. Unfortunately, they have history and he doesn't really trust her very much. She has problems with her faith, and that doesn't sit well with some people. The female sheriff in town believes, but knows that she won't ever be able to convince the rest of the town that the supernatural has descended on them. The local Romeo and Juliet don't help the mix much, especially since some of their families are smack dab in the middle of the dark side.

ORIGINAL SIN is the beginning of a series. It's a good start. I'm not entirely sure I understand exactly WHY Moira believes taking Fiona out is her responsibility, but it's not crucial. Some of the rivalries and feuds, on both sides of the divide, seem contrived; again, not crucial, if one buys into the original premise. This is certainly a competent entry into the "paranormal doomsday scenario" pantheon; if this is your kind of story, Brennan can write it as well as anyone else.
