Jack McClure is not your everyday hero. Due, in part, to his dyslexia this former ATF agent thinks in different ways from other individuals. He may have difficulty reading the printed word, but he has the ability to read crime scenes and situations in ways no average person can. He is an overthinker who manages to locate the "what's missing," the "what's wrong with this picture," much faster than an ordinary person. When he says something is wrong, it usually is and one has to try to catch up with his thought processes.

In LAST SNOW, a US senator is killed during a hit-and-run on the island of Capri, when he was supposed to be in the Ukraine for a diplomatic mission. The US president, still grateful for McClure's actions in saving his daughter in FIRST DAUGHTER, asks McClure to investigate the case as he knows that he will be able to see things others may miss. The senator's mission was very important and it needs to be looked into.

When it comes down to it, the plot meanders a bit as there is one more element involved in the story and that is the president's daughter. Alli Carson has imprinted herself on McClure. She went through an ordeal in the last book and the only person she trusts unconditionally is Jack. She manages to worm herself into McClure's mission, becoming an asset to the investigation. It also serves as a cathartic experience for her as both she and McClure have mental scars from the past. Each tries to find solace in the other, almost as a father and daughter. Together they help each other heal.

These two plots do not mesh too well and that might be distracting to some people. Those who have read FIRST DAUGHTER may appreciate this book better than those who have not read it. Nevertheless, there is action, suspense, as well as some surprises here and there. The only problem is that there is too much going on in the story, particular in the mind of these two characters. LAST SNOW would have been a better thriller if the personal issues were toned down, or so it seems to me.
