P.I. Gladdy Gold and her senior citizen cohorts have a new client, but probably not a paying client. The "Grandpa Bandit" has challenged them to catch him if they can. He's robbed six banks in the area, and the only thing witnesses can agree on is that he's an old man. Not much for the girls to go on, but they persist, in spite of advice from the police to stay out of it.

Gladdy and her honey, Jack Langford, are trying to move their romance to the next level. They can't seem to find any time to be alone. Her friends, his bridge club, a hurricane in Key West - everything seems to be conspiring against them. The hurricane does turn out to be a blessing in disguise; Jack winds up living with Gladdy because his apartment is part of the building that collapsed.

In the rubble of the building there is a skeleton. This gives Gladdy and the girls another mystery to pursue. All this while people are sharing apartments, trying to pull their lives back together, and generally to regroup after a disaster. This bunch of seniors is amazingly resilient. Life isn't perfect, but most people seem to retain some perspective, some semblance of civility.

DISASTER is the fifth in the Gladdy Gold series. Lakin has grown her characters, kept them interesting, and given us a bunch of people to care about. The plotting isn't mind-blowing but it certainly is complex enough to hold the book together and keep the series going. The romance between Jack and Gladdy is, based upon my limited experience, as realistic as any romance in that age group. Both people are human, with emotions and baggage and insecurities. They care very much for each other, and are worried about all the usual things going into a new romance, as well as some concerns that would only occur to people on the far side of sixty. DISASTER is a fun-filled book with characters a reader can enjoy and still be glad they aren't living next door.
