Andy Prescott is a young lawyer in Austin, Texas, who specializes in traffic law. He rides a bicycle, drinks beer and lacks ambition to do much else with his life. One day, however, a billionaire, Russell Reeves, comes into his office and retains him. Everything seems above board, but Andy quickly realizes that Reeves is a desperate man who will do whatever it takes to save his dying son. Will Andy go through with Reeves' wishes?

Mark Gimenez is fast making his name in the world of legal thrillers. He has already been compared to John Grisham in several quarters and, if he carries on producing thrillers of this ilk, I have no doubt that he will succeed in becoming just as famous as Grisham. In THE COMMON LAWYER, he has succeeded in writing an enjoyable novel that captures the reader's attention but that speeds along at a breakneck pace. He has reduced the detailed descriptions that detracted from the action in his previous novel, THE PERK, but his character development and narrative capability has not suffered in any way. Andy Prescott and his friends are characters with whom readers will be able to empathize, as Gimenez spends much time describing their ordinariness – they drink beer, eat Mexican food and like to chase girls. They could be any normal people living in a town in Texas, with their hobbies, fun and foibles.

It has to be said that the plot is slightly farfetched, with the behaviour of the hitmen particularly implausible, but the smooth nature of the writing and the characters' humour and interaction makes for such an enjoyable novel that readers will not mind. With its excellent pace, the pages of this novel fly past. Perfect easy reading and another novel that would make a smooth transition to the big screen.
