Emily Hudson is a woman on a mission. She travels to museums in war-torn and destabilized countries in order to salvage historic artifacts for protection by the United Nations. It is a job filled with danger, but one that she is passionate about. History is important to her and she will do all she can in order to protect it, even give her life for it. While on a job in Afghanistan she is kidnapped by Afghan mercenaries under the control of a mysterious man known only as "Staunton," a man with an agenda. He believes that Emily holds the key in finding an elusive treasure from Russia's Romanov era and he is determined to do what he can to get his hands on it. Staunton is not a man so easily deterred. When a covert operative, by the name of John Garrett, rescues Emily, the stakes get higher and the action ratchets up a notch. Unfortunately, the execution of the plot is not carried out as well as it might be.

Johansen cannot seem to make up her mind when it comes to what kind of character she wants Emily to be. Is she going to remain a victim who can only be saved by men or is she going to be the independent and strong-willed woman who will do what she must? Her character goes through too many flip flops to be credible and she threatens to become one of those archetypal female characters who are supposed to be really smart, but still do stupid things that only a man can get her out of.

The only thing that redeems this audio recording is the superb work done by Jennifer Van Dyck who does what she can with what she has. Her voice is pleasant to listen to and she has the vocal talent and stage experience to make the characters distinct and move the story along. Anything she reads is gold, but unfortunately this book is not worthy of her gifts.. That in itself is the bigger disappointment.
