Jane Bunker wears several hats, as do most people who live in small towns across the country. She is the assistant deputy of Knox County. She is also a marine insurance investigator. She’s got experience as an investigator because she used to be chief detective in Miami-Dade County, Florida. She’s also earned her chops on the water, working for some guy named Archie whose backstory we get hints of, but not in a lot of detail.

Coming back from an insurance investigation into some vandalism on a privately owned research vessel, the Quest, which is looking into whether oyster aquaculture will work in Cobscook Bay, Jane come across the Sea Pigeon, running in circles with no visible crew. This is not a good thing. It gets worse when they find nobody on board at all. The Coast Guard is not quick to start a search, but the lobstermen come out in force, and the Quest gets involved. Then a body is found, with a metal spike run through it.

FISHERMEN'S BEND is one of those blended mysteries, mostly police procedural with a definite cozy feel to it. Greenlaw has a good plot here, and the characters are believable, with one caveat. I was 30 or 40 pages into the book before it dawned on me that Jane must be at least in her 40's. Her romantic notions and the general tone of the book made me think she was at least 10 to 15 years younger. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, just something that struck me as I was reading. Any woman in her 40's who thinks fondly of being "Jane and Dane" with a man who hasn't even asked her out strikes me as being a little off. Other than that, this was a good read.
