Jan Burke, who is best known for her mystery series featuring southern California reporter Irene Kelly, goes into a whole new direction with her latest novel. In THE MESSENGER Burke channels early Dean Koontz and current Stephanie Meyer to create a supernatural story where the living and the dead work hand in hand to stop an ultimate evil from holding sway.

For more than last two hundred years, Tyler Hawthorne and his canine companion Shade have gone to the bedsides of the dying in order to collect messages to pass on to their loved ones as well as to receive instructions about where he would be needed next. He does not ask for anything in return and he keeps his personal history a secret. He's gotten the gratitude of many and the suspicions of a few. One of those skeptics is a young woman named Amanda who is intrigued by him. Tyler will be forced to make a tough decision regarding his future as a "messenger" and Amanda becomes a part of it. She is caught in the crosshairs of man who calls himself Lord Varre who has a long history with Tyler. In order to survive, Tyler and Amanda will ally themselves with ghosts, private security, and cemetery dogs. It is an interesting story and Jan Burke makes it entertaining.

THE MESSENGER is a bit different from what Jan Burke usually writes and it is a promising departure. The book has enough of the supernatural to make it interesting for those who want something different in their mystery and romantic stories. It is a good love story though it could become a bit convoluted at times. The ending also appears to be a bit rushed. However, this is a feel-good type book for a nice cozy night, as it will also warm your heart.
