Nick Horrigan is living a quiet life in California, believing that he has finally recovered from the traumatic events of his late teenage years. All is well until a SWAT team bursts into his apartment in the middle of the night, saying that a terrorist has taken over a nuclear facility and will blow it up unless he can speak to Nick. Inside the power plant, Nick is thrust back into the secrets of his past and finds a huge conspiracy that threatens his life.

WE KNOW, like Hurtwitz's previous novel, I SEE YOU, proceeds at a breakneck pace. The action is fast and furious and the novel is clearly written with a big screen adaptation in mind, as the author's background as a writer of screenplays for film and television might suggest. Because of this, there are times when the boundaries of plausibility are being stretched to near breaking point, but, given the quality of the writing and the excitement it generates, the reader will forgive this. WE KNOW is one of those books that you find yourself reading with a big smile on your face. Yes, the novel may set out an extremely unlikely scenario - but the reader does not care.

Nick Horrigan is an interesting character. Tormented by the past, desperate to atone for what he sees as his sins, yet at the same time, a fairly normal young man, he is an extremely likeable protagonist. The supporting cast, including a vagrant to whom Nick makes his shower available once a week, works well and the concluding chapters of the novel provide closure for all concerned, neatly tying the book together.

WE KNOW certainly does not operate on a high intellectual plane, but once it grabs hold of the reader, it does not let go. Extremely enjoyable and pure fun to read. Conspiracy novels are undoubtedly in vogue at the moment and WE KNOW deserves to sit atop the pile of books to read.
