THE NEXT VICTIM is more than a mystery thriller. It is a story of defense attorney Kali O’Brien's journey from the heights of the California Sierras to Tucson and its surrounding arid desert in search of proof that her brother was not a murderer and that his own death was not accidental.

Kali's last phone call from her brother comes at an inopportune time. She is vacationing with a man she hoped that she loved - if she knew what love really was. Later finding out that her brother had died just as he was about to be charged with murder, Kali is determined to clear her brother's name. In her quest she learns that she really didn't know her brother very well. When her sister Sabrina arrives to help Kali sort through their brother's things, Kali realizes that she is the distant one in the family and that Sabrina and their brother had had a special relationship that Kali had neither had nor wanted while growing up.

Jonnie Jacobs has created characters that are made of flesh and blood. There is homicide detective Erling who is assigned to the investigation initially and then forced to recuse himself just before the killer is identified because of a dirty little secret he didn’t want his wife to know about. Reed Logan and his sister Sloane Winslow, both members of the board of their family's grocery chain, have more personal secrets than corporate ones.

As more women are killed, Jacobs takes the reader on a very methodical but interesting chase in the pursuit of the killer. The reader is given an inside look into the sexual exploitation of teenage girls, poor students, and runaways.

The development of the character of Kali O’Brien as she learns more about herself and how she affects others is well worth the read. The ending is such a surprise that the reader will not feel cheated.
