In 1980, Robert Ludlum introduced readers to an amnesiac super spy and assassin named Jason Bourne in THE BOURNE IDENTITY. A man on the run who had no clue about his past, he did not know why people were trying to kill him. All he knew was that he had some sort of instinct when it came to fighting, languages, and evasive manoeuvres. The book turned out to be a huge success and led to two sequels, THE BOURNE SUPREMACY and THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM. Bourne discovered that he was actually a college professor, David Webb, who had taken part in a secret government project whose mission was to help perpetuate a myth regarding an ultimate spy and assassin. He had received the appropriate training to carry out the deception, but nothing turned out quite as planned and Jason Bourne is now a permanent part of David Webb.

We might have expected Bourne to die along with his author in 2001. Instead, he became part of a trademarked legacy, with Eric Van Lustbader carrying on the franchise. This is the third installment that bears his name.

In THE BOURNE SANCTION, a friend asking for his help calls Bourne into action. The murder of a college student has been linked to the Black Legion, a group with its roots in the Nazi era that has now allied itself with Islamic extremists. Bourne agrees to help, not realizing that there is more to the story than he was told. He is caught in the middle of a feud between government agencies over their battle plan in the war on terrorism. Jason Bourne is not a man you want to mess with, and THE BOURNE SANCTION shows why he is one of the most popular action heroes in fiction today.

The book is fast-paced and action-packed. The only thing that is hard to figure out is how Bourne keeps doing it after over twenty years. Like another well-known spy with the initials "JB," he remains forever in his prime.
