Lieutenant Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels and her partner Sergeant Herb Benedict are at the scene of a shooting; a sniper has killed a convicted sex offender. Whoever did it seems determined to make a habit of it - they left a calling card. While at the scene, Jack gets a call from Ravenswood. Exactly the same kind of crime, with the same calling card. Only this time, it's not just the offender who gets killed. Lots of cops have been shot and Herb is wounded.

In the middle of this disaster, Jack gets a call from her mother, Mary Streng, a retired cop. When she asks Jack to come over right away because of an emergency, Jack heads for the suburbs, leaving Herb to cover for her. The emergency, although Jack doesn’t know it yet, is that a woman she thought dead is holding her mother hostage. Alex Kork and Jack have history, none of it pleasant. Alex is crazy, seriously crazy. She wants revenge, and she wants it to be long and painful.

Meanwhile, the Urban Hunting Club regroups in a local bar. Three guys on a mission, although each of them has a different goal. One wants to avenge the rape of his wife. One wants to be a soldier of fortune. One just wants to escape his humdrum life and be famous. The last one has really screwed things up for the other two - he’s killed a bunch of cops and he's convinced that Jack saw him do it and must die. He’s planted a GPS on her car, so off they schlep to track her down.

In the meantime, Alex persuades Jack to call some friends whom Alex really wants to kill. Jack's fiancé is already there and the others come at Jack's request. When the Hunters arrive to find lots of people at Jack's house, life gets really crazy. Lots of gunfire, lots of craziness. If it all wasn't so deadly, it might actually be funny. Might.

Konrath has written another excellent novel. Jack confronts an old enemy, makes some impossible choices, and lives to fight another day. The cliffhanger at the end seems a little gratuitous, given how the story ends, although it is definitely in character. If one accepts the totally improbable set-up, Konrath keeps the suspense up and the action going at such a furious level, it's difficult to put the book down. Fans of Jack Daniels and her cronies have another gem of a book in hand.
